Boxing Day originated in the United Kingdom in 1871 after Queen Victoria included it in the Bank Holidays Act and it is celebrated in most Commonwealth countries. The custom started because servants had to wait on their employers on Christmas Day. So on Boxing Day they got the day off to spend with their families and employers would give them “boxes” to take home including gifts, bonuses and sometimes leftover food.
